Voluntary counseling and testing for HIV in Ihtiman

The Regional Health Inspectorate (RHI) for Larger Sofia region in cooperation with the Bulgarian Family Planning Association (BFPA) held a VCT campaign for residents of the Ihtiman Municipality. The tests were conducted by Dr. S. Andreeva, chief expert of the “Illness Prophylactics and Health Promotion” directorate and Mrs. D. Dikova, health manager with BFPA.
The initiatives for HIV testing throughout the country aim to focus the attention of society towards responsible sexual behaviour, using contraceptives and the significance of timely awareness of one’s HIV status for their own and their partner’s health.

NNC meeting on youth participation

What infact is children and youth participation, how is it regulated, whether, where and how successfully is it implemented; how to attract the local community in implementing ideas elaborated by the young people for the benefit of the city; how to resolve a specific problem; why do we “go with the flow” and hold parent-teacher meetings without the children present; how to include intergenerational education…

Volunteers - health mediators from NNHM helping in Varna

Volunteers - health mediators from 8 municipalities left for Varna on June 23rd (Monday) to help their colleagues cope with the aftermath of the disaster. The initiative for this mission comes from the National Network of Health Mediators (NNHM) and the coordiantor of the volunteer team is Velcho Mihalev, a health mediator in the Aitos municipality. The first volunteers to leave for Varna are Gergana Demireva (Karnobat), Asen Asenov (Shumen), Milyo Dobrev (Straldja), Valentin Chakurov (Tervel), Russi Bojidarov (Nova Zagora), Sasho Yordanov and Natasha Todorova (Sliven).

Workshop for Health mediators and coordinators of mediation programs from seven European countries took place in Sofia

In June 2014 the National Network of Health Mediators (NNHM) in partnership with International Organisation for Migration (IOM) organized three-days workshop in Sofia for mediators and coordinators of mediation programs from seven EU countries - Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Romania and Slovakia. The workshop is part of the Pilot Regional Initiative “Health Mediation among Roma Community” within the project “EQUI HEALTH - Fostering Health Provision for Migrants, the Roma and Other Vulnerable Groups”. Dr. Radosveta Stamenkova (Executive Director of Bulgarian Family Planning Association) presented interventions among vulnerable communities targeting trafficking of human beings prevention, school drop-outs and family planning, which are implementedamong Roma community with the assistance of the Health mediators.

Representatives of BFPA and other NGOs at the MAN2014 European conference in Belgrade

The Bulgarian Family Planning and Sexual Health Association (BFPA) was the Bulgarian partner of the MAN2014 European conference held in Belgrade from the 9th to the 11th April 2014. The Bulgarian representatives shared their experience with members of delegations from 13 European countries. The main focus of the discussions was in the field of gender equality, and aggression and violence prevention, but this time from a male point of view. NGOs, international organizations and governmental structures shared their different methods of work and good practices. It was a pleasure to share our Bulgarian experience. During the discussion special attention was given on the relevance of media and social networks – according to the latest data 16 minutes out of every hour on the internet are spent in Facebook, which shifts the communication models and the approach to news dissemination among not only young people, but all the generations.

Presenting the short animation “Emi and Ani” at the “Early childbirth and protection of children’s rights and interests” meeting, organized by the SCPA

On April 1st at the at the Burgas governor’s hall took place a discussion themed “Early childbirth and protection of children’s rights and interests”, organized by the chairman of the State Child Protection Agency (CSPA) Eva Jecheva. Among the participants were the UNICEF representative for Bulgaria Tanya Radocaj, the governor of Burgas, the deputy–mayors of Burgas, Sliven and Varna, representatives of different RHIs, parliamentarians, NGOs, health mediators, hospital directors from Burgas, Varna and Sliven. BFPA was represented by Dr. Radosveta Stamenkova and Ventzislav Kirkov. BFPA’s printed materials as well as the short film “Emi and Ani” attracted a lot of interest. As usual, we shared everything we had in our hearts and on our minds. We are hoping for support, so that no girls drop out of school or have to get married at the age of 14!

BFPA survey about positive birth-rate measures

The Bulgarian Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health (BFPA) presented the results of a nationally representative survey conducted by KANTAR. The study took place in August 2022, among a sample of 836 people from the adult population and analyzed the measures that would positively affect the birth rate.

Final conference on ARIE project: PLHIV and fitness

On November 11, 2022, the final conference of the ARIE project was held in Sofia. The project is supported by the Erasmus+ Sport program, led by the long-standing Italian partner of BFPA ANLAIDS – Lombardia. The rest of the participating organizations are from Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia. The activities are aimed at people living with HIV (PLHIV), the goal of the project is to develop and introduce a fitness program and an activity protocol for people living with HIV. In Bulgaria the project was coordinated by Boyan Mladenov from the BFPA team. Among the participants of the conference were health specialists, professors from medical universities, NGO partners, representatives of the target group. From the Bulgarian side the most outstanding was the presentation of Prof. Radka Argirova “HIV,Covid and Monkeypox - what more we have to know”
The project aims to promote physical activity in the form of personalized guidelines among people between the ages of 18 and 50 who are living with HIV and who are on treatment, offering an innovative fitness protocol to engage them in moderate physical activity.
This is the first project in Europe specifically targeting people living with HIV and fitness to promote a healthy lifestyle and add fitness protocols to HIV therapy.

 
Presentation of the results of a regional study and recommendations for SRH services in the European Parliament - project "Youth Voices, Youth Choices"

In the last months of 2022 the partners of the YVYC project, together with experts and young people, developed recommendations for regional policy recommendations for improvement of health and social systems and SRHR services for young people after the Covid 19 pandemic.
The recommendations are targeting decision-makers at international and national institutions.  They were presented in the European Parliament on October 26, 2022 by young advocates and experts, with the support of MEP Fred Matic. Three BFPA representatives - Victoria Nikolova, Venelin Stoychev and Pavlina Filipova participated in the EP meeting.
