On Dec 15 2016 at an official ceremony at the “Slaveikov” hall of the French Cultural Institute the Fifth Valia Krushkina – Journalizm for the people” Media awards were given. Eight journalists received the prizes in separate categories of the competition, and 13 more were distinguished for their nomination in the final three competitors.
BFPA supports the competition and also the campaign “Journalists in School” from their beginning. This year there were 59 nominations with more than 130 articles and videos. The nominations were evaluated by a 12-member jury. Besides giving out awards in separate categories, this year the jury awarded a Grand prize “Valia Krushkina – Journalizm for the people”.
The jury and the members of the Public board of the “Valia Krushkina” Fund work entirely pro bono.
The winner of the Grand prize is Genka Shikerova. In the “Printed media” category the award was received by Panaiot Angarev. Marian Ivanov is the winner in the “Radio”category, and in “Television” the prize received Maria Milkova. For “Önline media” the first place was shared by Svetla Encheva and Maria Ilcheva. Ivailo Minkov received the award for “Photo journalist” and Dimitar Dimitrov – the “Young journalist” category.
The “Valia Krushkina – Journalizm for the people” Media awards are meant for journalists with an active civic position that they hold in the name of ordinary people. During the years changes have been made in the different categories in reflection of development of journalism in Bulgaria. The competition has made a name for itself within and outside the media world. In the previous 4 competitions more than 250 journalists with over 450 articles and videos have been nominated. Five years after the initiative began; the awards have become a standard for quality journalism, thus proving the necessity for their existence.
